Product Reliability

Two different definitions of product reliability are in common usage.

Definition 1

Reliability is the probability that a product will perform its intended function for a specified period of time within a defined environment without failure.

This definition lends itself to a predictive approach to reliability and is useful in designing product that can be readily testing under the conditions in which it is expected to operate in customer usage.

Definition 2

Reliability is Failure Mode Avoidance.

Failure Mode Avoidance promotes an approach to product design based on improvement and is particularly useful in designing product which customers use in a wide variety of ways under significantly different conditions. This second definition is central to the book.
